The History Of L.A.R.A.
LARA was started in 2003. It was master minded by John KD4OUZ, Linda KI4FVX, Joe KG4RYF, and Ed KI4EEI.
Louisa was one of a few towns in the area that at the time,
didn’t have an Amateur Radio club.
It was time we had one.
Every year except one, we have been able to participate in the Louisa Air Show that is held. Here we have tried to spread the word about Amateur Radio. Not many social activities, walk-a-thons, parades, exist in Louisa, so we can only hope we can make a great appearance every year at this event.
Sadly, after many years, we no longer do this.
We started out having our meetings, along with breakfast at Mineral Restaurant. It was hard to conduct business there, so we moved to The Inwood in Gordonsville.
We have been going there several years, and just recently decided on locating another place to take care of our business.
Then it was decided you get nothing done at meetings with food 🙂
In 2006 Linda KI4FVX, purchased a Motorola MSF5000 UHF repeater. John KD4OUZ went out and got coordination on a 440Mhz. frequency pair.
For several years the County of Louisa had been entertaining the idea of allowing LARA some space on one of their towers. We have worked close beside them and have successfully installed a reliable repeater for communications within the County.
And if it were ever needed, the County would have full coverage backup within Louisa.
